
Bridging Cultures: My Practicum Experience in Indonesia as a Filipino Student
About the Author

Katherine Ann Maylas was born on August 6, 2002, in General Trias, Cavite, Philippines. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Special Needs Education at Cavite State University – Don Severino de las Alas Campus, located in Indang, Cavite. Since her first year in college, she has consistently excelled academically, earning a highest General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.20 under 21 units.

A consistent academic achiever, Ms. Maylas is a proud Iskolar ng Bayan (City Scholar) of General Trias City. She has been receiving educational support from the city government, led by Mayor Jon-Jon Ferrer.
​
In addition to her academic excellence, she actively participates in various school organizations. She currently serves as the Fourth Year Representative of the Education Circle and the Vice President for Budget and Finance of the College of Education – Student Council.
​
Recognizing her dedication and achievements, she was recently nominated for the Most Outstanding Student of the Year in the College of Education.

Beyond the university, Ms. Maylas is also known for her passion and commitment to community service. She holds leadership roles in several organizations:

Secretary of JCI General Trias Katipunan, one of the longest-running youth organizations in General Trias City, Cavite.

Campaign Manager and Political Adviser of Partido Kapit-Bisig, a prominent student political party in Governor Ferrer Memorial Integrated National High School, where she has been involved since high school.

Chairperson of Kaya Nation Youth – General Trias, a non-government organization (NGO) leading youth volunteer efforts in the city.

She participated in the SEA-Teacher Project, an initiative by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). This program offers 3rd- and 4th-year education students the opportunity to gain international teaching experience through one-month placements in Southeast Asian countries.​
​
During her time in the program, Katherine Ann had the opportunity to observe and assist in classrooms, deliver lessons, and immerse herself in diverse educational settings. This experience not only enhanced her teaching skills but also broadened her cultural understanding and global perspective.​
​
The SEA-Teacher Project aims to develop teaching skills, improve English proficiency, and foster cross-cultural learning among future educators in Southeast Asia. Katherine Ann's participation reflects her commitment to becoming a globally competent educator
